What does your deck staining service include?
Our deck staining service includes professional cleaning and preparation of the wood, followed by application of your chosen stain. We assess the condition of the deck beforehand to determine what preparation is needed.
Do you clean the deck before staining it?
Yes. We soft wash the deck using a specialized wood cleaner to help remove dirt, algae, weathering, and other organic buildup. The wood is then allowed to dry sufficiently before staining.
Can I choose the type or level of stain?
Yes. Different stain types offer different levels of colour coverage and protection. In general, transparent stains provide the most natural look but require more frequent maintenance, while semi-transparent and solid stains provide progressively more colour and UV protection and can typically last longer before needing to be reapplied.
What is the difference between transparent, semi-transparent, and solid stains?
Transparent stains add subtle colour while allowing most of the natural wood grain to remain visible. Semi-transparent stains provide more colour and protection while still showing the wood grain. Solid stains provide the most colour coverage and generally offer the greatest protection from UV exposure and weathering, but they cover more of the natural wood grain.
Does a more solid stain last longer?
Generally, yes. More opaque stains contain more pigment, which helps protect the wood from UV exposure and can extend the time between maintenance coats. However, the actual lifespan depends on the product used, the condition of the wood, sun and weather exposure, and how heavily the deck is used. A more transparent stain may need to be maintained more frequently but can be a better choice if preserving the natural appearance of the wood is the priority.
Can you stain a deck that has already been stained?
In many cases, yes. However, the existing finish needs to be assessed first. Depending on the type and condition of the existing stain, additional preparation may be required before applying a new finish.
Will staining protect my deck from the weather?
Staining helps protect exposed wood from moisture, sunlight, and everyday weathering while improving its appearance. However, stain is not a permanent barrier, and regular maintenance is still important to keep the deck in good condition.
